Potassium

Contextual Mineral

What Potassium Does

Potassium is an essential electrolyte that maintains proper heart rhythm, supports muscle contraction and nerve signaling, and regulates fluid balance within cells. Cats with chronic kidney disease commonly develop low potassium (hypokalemia) because their failing kidneys excrete too much potassium in urine. This makes potassium monitoring especially important for senior cats and any cat diagnosed with renal disease.

How Much?

A small piece of cooked salmon (about 30g) provides roughly 60–80mg of potassium — your adult cat needs approximately 150–400mg per day. Meat and fish-based diets provide adequate potassium for healthy cats. Cats with kidney disease may need potassium supplementation under veterinary guidance.

0.98% of daily nutrient intake

Potassium makes up 0.98% of your cat's total daily nutritional requirements by weight. That's a tiny amount — but it matters.

Signs of Deficiency

Generalized muscle weakness (especially noticeable as a stiff gait or difficulty jumping), ventroflexion of the neck (head dropping toward the chest), lethargy, poor appetite, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. Hypokalemia is common in cats with kidney disease.

Signs of Excess

Excess potassium (hyperkalemia) is dangerous and can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. It is usually caused by kidney failure, urinary obstruction, or certain medications rather than dietary intake.

Nutrient Interactions

Ratio-Dependent Sodium ↔ Potassium

Sodium and potassium work as opposing electrolytes to maintain fluid balance, nerve function, and blood pressure. The body carefully regulates their ratio through kidney function.

What this means: Healthy cats on balanced diets self-regulate sodium-potassium balance through their kidneys. For cats with kidney disease or heart conditions, your veterinarian may adjust dietary sodium and supplement potassium to compensate for kidney losses.
