🍞 Carbohydrates

Contextual Macronutrient

What Carbohydrates Does

Carbohydrates are your hamster's primary energy source, fueling those nightly wheel marathons and burrowing sessions. Seeds and grains — the foundation of a hamster's diet — are naturally carbohydrate-rich, so deficiency is never a concern. The real issue is managing carbohydrate quality and quantity. Simple sugars (from fruits and sweet vegetables) cause rapid blood sugar spikes, which is particularly dangerous for dwarf hamsters who are genetically prone to diabetes. Complex carbohydrates from whole grains break down slowly, providing steady energy without blood sugar roller coasters. This is why whole oats, barley, and millet are preferred over sugary treats.

How Much?

Whole grains make up the bulk of every hamster diet, providing roughly 40-50% of calories as complex carbohydrates — your hamster eats about 10-12g of food per day, with roughly 4-6g being carbohydrate-rich grains and seeds. The key is choosing complex carbohydrates (oats, barley, millet) over simple sugars. Limit fruit treats to a blueberry-sized portion no more than two to three times per week, and avoid sugary treats entirely for dwarf hamsters.

Carbohydrates makes up 55.57% of your hamster's total daily nutritional requirements by weight.

Signs of Deficiency

Carbohydrate deficiency does not occur in hamsters eating any normal seed or grain-based diet. The diet is inherently carbohydrate-rich.

Signs of Excess

Obesity and diabetes are the primary concerns from excess carbohydrates, especially simple sugars. Dwarf hamsters (Campbell's, Winter White, Chinese) are particularly susceptible to diabetes. Signs of diabetes include excessive drinking, frequent urination, weight loss despite eating, and lethargy. Syrian hamsters are also diabetes-prone though slightly less so than dwarfs.
