Preparation
1Roast the squash halves face-down at 200°C for about 25-30 minutes until the flesh is tender.
2While that's roasting, brown the turkey in a pan with a splash of water (no oil needed).
3Toss the chopped cranberries and peas into the turkey pan for the last 2 minutes just to soften them up.
4Flip the squash over, fill the "hole" with the turkey mixture, and let it cool down significantly before serving.
Best Time to Serve
Alongside your own holiday dinner
Purpose
This is a ceremonial meal. It provides high-quality lean protein and seasonal antioxidants in a form that encourages "foraging" and tearing, which dogs find incredibly satisfying.
When to Use
Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any Sunday when you want to feel like a five-star pet chef.
What to Expect
A beautiful, roasted squash "bowl" overflowing with savory turkey and bright red cranberry jewels. It looks good enough for the "Gram."
Does Not Fix
It won't stop your dog from staring at your turkey, but it’ll give them something better to do.
Time to Effect
A very happy, sleepy "food coma" shortly after eating.
Safety Risks
Ensure the squash is cool! Dogs can burn their mouths on "steaming" veggies.
Remove any thick, woody stems from the squash before serving.
Enrichment Ideas
Easy: Scoop the stuffing out and mix with kibble.
Medium: Serve the whole boat and let them "shred" the squash skin (if it’s soft).
Hard: Hide the stuffed squash in a cardboard box so they have to "hunt" for their holiday meal.
Owner Tips
Most dogs love the skin of roasted squash, but if yours is picky, just scoop the insides out for them.
Make sure you use plain turkey—no brine, no butter, no garlic powder!
This makes a great photo op, so have your camera ready.
