Frozen Backyard Bones

The ultimate summer "pacifier"—a layered, icy bone that keeps them cool, hydrated, and blissfully occupied.

Medium 10 min prep + 4 hours freeze Summer 1 large frozen bone

Ingredients 3 items

  • Fresh Parsley optional 1 tablespoon
    Finely minced
  • Plain Greek Yogurt 1 cup
    No sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • Watermelon 1 cup
    Seedless and blended into juice

Preparation

1

Grab a large bone-shaped silicone mold. Fill the bottom third with your Greek yogurt and pop it in the freezer for 1 hour to set.

2

Blend your seedless watermelon until it’s liquid. Pour this over the frozen yogurt layer, filling it another third of the way. Back to the freezer for another hour!

3

For the final layer, mix your minced parsley into the remaining yogurt (or just a splash of water) and fill to the top. Freeze for at least 2 more hours until rock solid.

Best Time to Serve

High noon on a scorching July day

Purpose

This is a "duration treat." It provides mental stimulation through gnawing while simultaneously lowering the dog's core temperature and providing a burst of antioxidants.

When to Use

Use when you're grilling on the patio and want the dog to stay in one spot, or during extreme heatwaves.

What to Expect

A beautiful, multi-colored layered popsicle shaped like a classic bone; it starts white, turns deep pink, and finishes with a speckle of green.

Does Not Fix

Will not prevent sunburn on thin-coated dogs.

Time to Effect

Immediate cooling sensation.

Safety Risks

Watch for "brain freeze"—if your dog tries to swallow it whole, hold one end for them.

Ensure the watermelon is 100% seed-free to avoid tummy blocks.

Owner Tips

Run the mold under warm water for 5 seconds to pop the bones out easily.

Serve these outside—as they melt, the watermelon juice can get sticky on carpets.

If your dog has sensitive teeth, let the bone sit out for 5 minutes to soften slightly before giving it to them.
