Raw Potato

Solanum tuberosum

Also known as: green potato, potato skin, potato eyes, raw potato, uncooked potato

Danger (Avoid)

Raw potatoes — especially green ones or those with sprouting eyes — contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid toxin that is dangerous to rabbits. Potatoes are not part of a rabbit's natural diet in any form, but raw potatoes are actively poisonous. Even cooked potato is harmful because of its starch content, but raw is in a different league of danger entirely.

Quantity

Even a few bites of raw potato can cause GI distress in a rabbit. Green or sprouted potatoes are dangerous in any amount. There is no safe quantity of raw potato for rabbits.

Notes

Green-tinged potatoes and potato sprouts have the highest solanine concentrations. Potato peelings in the compost or trash are a common exposure for house rabbits who roam the kitchen. Potato leaves and stems from garden plants are even more toxic than the tuber itself. Even cooked potato, while not acutely toxic from solanine, is too starchy for rabbits and can cause fatal GI disruption.

Negative Signs

* Drooling and mouth irritation
* Severe diarrhea or complete cessation of droppings (both are emergencies)
* Bloated, tight abdomen
* Refusal to eat or drink
* Lethargy and hunched posture
* Teeth grinding (a sign of pain in rabbits)
* Tremors or weakness in severe cases

FAQ

Q: My rabbit ate a small piece of cooked potato. Is that as bad as raw?
A: Cooked potato doesn't have the acute solanine danger, but it's still problematic. The high starch content can disrupt your rabbit's gut flora and trigger GI stasis. It's not a vet emergency if it was a tiny piece, but don't make it a habit and watch your rabbit's droppings closely for 24 hours.

Q: My rabbit got into potato peelings from the trash. Should I worry?
A: Yes — potato peels have higher solanine concentrations than the flesh, especially if any were green. Call your vet and monitor for droppings, appetite, and behavior changes.

Alternatives

If your rabbit wants something crunchy and root-like, a small piece of carrot or a slice of bell pepper is a safe, satisfying alternative.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your rabbit ate raw potato — especially green parts, eyes, or peel — contact your vet immediately. Watch for any changes in droppings over the next 12-24 hours. A rabbit that stops producing droppings is in a GI emergency regardless of what caused it.
