Caffeine

Also known as: coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills, coffee grounds

Danger (Avoid)

Coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills — anything with caffeine is a serious threat to your rabbit. Their tiny bodies and sensitive cardiovascular systems simply cannot handle stimulants that humans shrug off. And just like with chocolate, rabbits can't vomit it back up.

Quantity

A rabbit's toxic threshold for caffeine is far lower than a dog's or cat's. Even a few sips of strong coffee or a partial tea bag could be dangerous for a standard-sized rabbit.

Notes

The most common exposure is rabbits getting into spilled drinks or reaching coffee grounds in an accessible trash can. Tea bags, energy drink spills, and chocolate-covered espresso beans are all potential sources. Free-roaming house rabbits are especially at risk because they explore everything at floor level.

Negative Signs

* Hyperactivity and restlessness that seems frantic, not playful
* Rapid, pounding heartbeat
* Heavy panting or labored breathing (abnormal in rabbits)
* Muscle tremors and twitching
* Seizures
* Collapse

FAQ

Q: My rabbit licked a coffee spill off the floor. Should I be worried?
A: If it was just a lick or two, monitor closely for restlessness, tremors, or rapid breathing. If your rabbit drank more than a few laps, call your vet. Small rabbits are at higher risk from any amount.

Alternatives

Fresh water is the only drink your rabbit needs. If you want to offer something special, a splash of unsweetened chamomile tea (caffeine-free, cooled) is safe in very small amounts.

Risks & Disclaimer

Contact your vet immediately if your rabbit ingested anything containing caffeine. Coffee grounds from the trash, spilled tea, and caffeine pills are the most dangerous exposures. Describe the source and estimated amount when you call.
