Avocado

Persea americana

Also known as: avocados, guacamole

Danger (Avoid)

Avocado is far more dangerous to rabbits than most people realize. While the persin toxin affects dogs mildly, it hits rabbits hard — causing respiratory distress, fluid buildup around the heart, and death. Every part of the avocado plant is toxic to rabbits: the fruit, skin, pit, and leaves.

Quantity

There is no safe amount of avocado for rabbits. Even a small piece of flesh contains enough persin to cause serious harm. Rabbits are among the most sensitive domestic animals to persin toxicity.

Notes

All parts of the avocado are toxic to rabbits — flesh, skin, pit, and leaves. Guacamole is doubly dangerous because it adds onion and garlic. Avocado-containing salads, sushi rolls, and toast left within reach of a free-roaming house rabbit are common exposure scenarios. Even avocado oil should be avoided.

Negative Signs

* Difficulty breathing — open-mouth breathing, gasping (extremely abnormal in rabbits)
* Lethargy and weakness
* Swollen, fluid-filled abdomen
* Refusal to eat
* Sitting hunched with head tilted up (trying to breathe)
* Sudden death — persin toxicity can kill before obvious symptoms appear

FAQ

Q: I've heard avocado is okay for dogs. Is it really that much worse for rabbits?
A: Yes, dramatically worse. Dogs are relatively tolerant of the persin in avocado flesh. Rabbits are among the most sensitive animals to persin — it causes heart and lung damage that is frequently fatal. The rules for dogs do not apply to rabbits.

Alternatives

For healthy fats, rabbits don't need supplementation — a proper hay-based diet provides everything they need. A small piece of banana or a few cilantro sprigs will make your rabbit far happier than avocado ever could.

Risks & Disclaimer

Any avocado exposure in a rabbit is an emergency. Contact your vet immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms develop — by the time a rabbit shows respiratory distress, the damage to the heart and lungs may already be severe and irreversible.
