Garlic

Allium sativum

Also known as: garlic cloves, garlic powder, garlic salt, roasted garlic

Danger (Avoid)

Garlic is in the same family as onion and causes the same type of red blood cell damage — but it's more potent per gram. Some equine supplements actually contain garlic, marketed as a fly repellent, which means some horses get low-level exposure on a regular basis. Veterinary opinion on this practice is increasingly negative.

Quantity

Studies have shown Heinz body formation in horses receiving as little as 0.2 grams of freeze-dried garlic per kilogram of body weight daily. For a 500kg horse, that's about 100 grams per day — which is within the range of some commercial garlic supplement dosing recommendations. Lower doses may still cause subclinical damage over time.

Notes

Garlic supplements for horses are widely sold as fly deterrents. The research supporting this claim is thin, while the research showing garlic causes Heinz body formation in horses is solid. A 2005 study found that horses fed garlic at typical supplement doses developed significant Heinz body anemia within 71 days. Wild garlic growing in pastures is another exposure source.

Negative Signs

* Exercise intolerance — your horse tires faster than normal
* Pale gums and mucous membranes
* Elevated resting heart rate
* Rapid breathing
* Dark or reddish-brown urine
* Lethargy and general dullness
* Signs may develop gradually over weeks of exposure

FAQ

Q: I've been feeding my horse garlic for years as a fly repellent. Is it really dangerous?
A: The research says yes. A peer-reviewed study showed that horses fed garlic at typical supplement doses developed significant Heinz body anemia within weeks. Just because your horse hasn't shown obvious symptoms doesn't mean there's no damage — Heinz body formation can be subclinical. Ask your vet to run a blood smear to check, and switch to proven fly control methods.

Alternatives

For fly control, proven alternatives include fly sheets, fly masks, insect-repellent sprays approved for equine use, and environmental management (manure removal, standing water elimination). These work better and don't damage your horse's blood cells.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your horse has been on a garlic supplement and shows any signs of anemia — pale gums, exercise intolerance, rapid breathing — stop the supplement immediately and call your vet for blood work. Heinz body formation can be detected on a blood smear before severe anemia develops.
