Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Also known as: Love apple, tomate, cherry tomato, beefsteak tomato

Danger (Avoid)

Tomato presents a dual threat to hamsters. The acidic flesh causes the same cheek pouch damage as citrus, while the leaves, stems, and green unripe portions contain tomatine and solanine — genuine toxins from the nightshade family. Between the acid and the alkaloids, there is no safe way to offer tomato to your hamster.

Quantity

A single cherry tomato is an oversized dose for a hamster, both in acid content and volume. Even a tiny piece of ripe tomato can irritate cheek pouches if pouched. Green tomato and plant parts are toxic at any amount.

Notes

Hamsters kept near gardens or kitchen windowsills where tomato plants grow are at special risk. They will chew on tomato leaves and vines given any access. Cherry tomato halves are a particularly common mistake — owners see the small size and think "hamster-sized," but the acid content is just as damaging.

Negative Signs

* Swollen or inflamed cheek pouches
* Pawing at the mouth
* Diarrhea (watery, potentially bloody)
* Drooling and reluctance to eat
* Lethargy and hunched posture
* Tremors if green parts were consumed

FAQ

Q: My hamster stole a tiny piece of tomato from my salad. How bad is this?
A: Watch your hamster closely. If they pouched it, check for cheek swelling over the next few hours. A very small piece of ripe tomato is unlikely to cause solanine toxicity, but the acid can still irritate cheek pouches. If you see swelling, drooling, or diarrhea, call your vet.

Alternatives

Cucumber is the perfect tomato substitute for hamsters — similar texture, mild flavor, high water content without the dangerous acidity, and most hamsters devour it happily.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your hamster ate tomato — especially any green parts, leaves, or stem — contact your exotic vet. Watch for cheek pouch swelling and diarrhea over the next 12-24 hours. Dehydration from diarrhea is a fast killer in hamsters.
