Raw Potato

Solanum tuberosum

Also known as: green potato, potato skin, potato eyes, raw potato, uncooked potato

Danger (Avoid)

Raw potato — especially any green parts, eyes, or sprouts — contains solanine, a glycoalkaloid that is toxic to hamsters even in small amounts. Cooked potato flesh has much lower solanine levels, but raw potato is genuinely dangerous and should never be offered or left where your hamster can forage.

Quantity

A piece of raw potato the size of your hamster's paw is enough to cause gastrointestinal distress and potential solanine toxicity. Green-tinged potato is even more dangerous. No raw potato is safe for hamsters.

Notes

Potato peelings in the trash or compost are a common source of accidental exposure for free-roaming hamsters. The highest solanine concentrations are in green potatoes, sprouts, and the "eyes" — but all raw potato carries some risk.

Negative Signs

* Drooling and pawing at the mouth
* Diarrhea (which can cause fatal dehydration in hamsters)
* Bloating and visible abdominal discomfort
* Lethargy and lack of interest in the wheel
* Tremors and uncoordinated movement
* Difficulty breathing in severe cases

FAQ

Q: Can I give my hamster a small piece of cooked potato?
A: A tiny piece of plain, fully cooked potato with no seasoning, butter, or green spots is generally considered low-risk. But raw potato, potato skin, green potato, and any sprouted parts are all dangerous and should never be offered.

Alternatives

A tiny piece of cooked, plain sweet potato (no seasoning, no butter) is a much safer starchy treat. Sweet potatoes do not contain solanine.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your hamster ate raw potato — especially green-tinged, sprouted, or with eyes — call your exotic vet. Dehydration from diarrhea alone can kill a hamster within 24 hours, and solanine poisoning compounds the danger.
