Onion

Allium cepa

Also known as: onions, red onion, white onion, yellow onion, shallots, spring onions

Danger (Avoid)

Onion is a slow-burning poison for hamsters. The damage builds quietly — your hamster could seem fine for days while their red blood cells are being systematically destroyed from the inside. By the time you notice something is wrong, the anemia may already be severe and difficult to reverse in an animal this small.

Quantity

Even a tiny flake of raw onion is disproportionately dangerous for a 30-40 gram animal. Onion powder is the most concentrated and therefore the most dangerous form. There is no safe amount for hamsters.

Notes

The biggest risk is onion powder in human snack foods. A single seasoned cracker or chip dropped near the cage can contain more onion per gram than your hamster can handle. If your hamster free-roams near the kitchen, this is a real hazard.

Negative Signs

* Lethargy and reluctance to move
* Pale or bluish ears, feet, and nose
* Rapid, shallow breathing
* Loss of appetite
* Dark or reddish urine
* Weakness when trying to climb or grip

FAQ

Q: My hamster stole a piece of cracker that had onion seasoning on it. Is that really enough to hurt them?
A: It can be. Onion powder is highly concentrated — a dusting on a cracker that means nothing to a human is a proportionally huge dose for a hamster. Watch for lethargy, pale extremities, and changes in urine color over the next few days, and call your vet to be safe.

Alternatives

If you want to offer your hamster a vegetable with flavor, a thin slice of bell pepper (not hot pepper) is a safe, nutritious choice that many hamsters love.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your hamster ate any onion, contact an exotic vet right away. Do not wait for symptoms — the blood cell damage happens silently over 1-5 days, and by the time signs appear, a significant percentage of red blood cells may already be destroyed.
