Wild Mushrooms

Also known as: toadstools, forest mushrooms, yard mushrooms, lawn mushrooms

Danger (Avoid)

Guinea pigs should never eat mushrooms of any kind — wild or store-bought. While button mushrooms from the grocery store probably won't kill your guinea pig, mushrooms have no nutritional value for them, are difficult for their herbivore gut to process, and wild mushrooms can be rapidly fatal. The safest rule is simply: no mushrooms, period.

Quantity

A single wild mushroom of a toxic species can be lethal to a guinea pig. There is no way to determine a safe amount without knowing the species, and even mycologists can struggle with field identification. Assume all wild mushrooms are deadly.

Notes

Outdoor playtime in the garden is the highest-risk scenario. Mushrooms pop up overnight after rain, and guinea pigs graze close to the ground where they'll encounter them. Always inspect the play area thoroughly before letting your pigs out. Even "safe" store-bought mushrooms can cause gas and bloating, which in guinea pigs can escalate to GI stasis — a life-threatening condition where the gut stops moving.

Negative Signs

* Drooling and wet chin
* Bloated, tight belly
* Refusing to eat
* Lethargy — lying flat instead of active
* Diarrhea
* Seizures or tremors (with toxic species)
* Rapid deterioration — fine one hour, critical the next

FAQ

Q: Can guinea pigs eat button mushrooms from the store?
A: While store-bought mushrooms are unlikely to be toxic, they offer no nutritional value for guinea pigs and can cause gas and bloating. Guinea pigs are herbivores designed to eat hay, vegetables, and small amounts of fruit — not fungi. It's best to skip mushrooms entirely.

Q: My guinea pig ate something in the yard that might have been a mushroom. What do I do?
A: Check the area where your pig was grazing. If you can find any mushrooms nearby, photograph them and call your exotic vet immediately. Don't wait for symptoms — mushroom poisoning can progress from "seems fine" to critical very quickly in an animal this small.

Alternatives

For something with a different texture in your guinea pig's diet, try a small piece of bell pepper or a thin slice of zucchini — they offer crunch and nutrition without any of the risk.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your guinea pig ate a wild mushroom during outdoor time, treat it as an emergency. Try to photograph or collect the mushroom (use a bag, not bare hands) and bring it to the vet. Mushroom poisoning in guinea pigs can be fatal within hours. Even if you're "pretty sure" it's a harmless species, don't gamble with it.
