Lettuce

Lactuca sativa

Also known as: Romaine, iceberg, butterhead

Danger (Avoid)

Iceberg lettuce is one of the most common mistakes guinea pig owners make, because it looks like exactly the kind of leafy green they should be eating. But iceberg is the nutritional equivalent of crunchy water — almost no vitamins, no fiber worth mentioning, and so much water content that it causes diarrhea. For guinea pigs, diarrhea isn't just messy — it's dangerous.

Quantity

One small piece once won't harm your guinea pig, but there's simply no reason to offer it when better options exist. Regular or large amounts will cause diarrhea and contribute nothing nutritionally. It takes up stomach space that should be filled with hay, vitamin-C-rich vegetables, and darker greens.

Notes

The confusion happens because other lettuces — romaine, green leaf, red leaf — are excellent guinea pig foods. People buy "lettuce" without realizing that iceberg is nutritionally worthless compared to its darker-leafed cousins. The rule of thumb: the darker and leafier the lettuce, the better. If it's pale, crunchy, and mostly white at the base, it's iceberg, and it doesn't belong in the cage.

Negative Signs

* Watery, loose droppings (normal guinea pig poops are firm, olive-shaped pellets)
* Wet, soiled rear end
* Lethargy and reduced activity
* Decreased appetite for hay (they fill up on water-heavy lettuce instead)
* Bloated belly from gas
* Weight loss over time despite eating

FAQ

Q: I've been feeding my guinea pig iceberg lettuce for weeks. Are they in danger?
A: If your pig seems healthy with normal droppings, they've probably been tolerating it, but they're not getting the nutrition they need. Switch to romaine or green leaf lettuce and increase bell pepper for Vitamin C. Transition gradually over a few days to avoid shocking their gut.

Q: What's the best lettuce for guinea pigs?
A: Romaine is the most popular and widely available. Green leaf and red leaf are also excellent. All of these have dramatically more Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and fiber than iceberg. Avoid iceberg entirely — it's not worth the space it takes up in their stomach.

Alternatives

Romaine lettuce is the direct upgrade — similar crunch and hydration, but with actual Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and fiber. Green leaf and red leaf lettuce are even better. For maximum Vitamin C impact, bell pepper is the champion.

Risks & Disclaimer

A single leaf of iceberg lettuce isn't an emergency, but regular feeding can cause chronic diarrhea and malnutrition. If your guinea pig has watery droppings that don't resolve within 24 hours, contact your exotic vet — dehydration can sneak up fast on animals this small.
