Quantity
As few as 2–3 nuts can cause symptoms in a small dog. Toxicity has been reported at roughly 2.4 grams per kilogram of body weight, which is a surprisingly small handful.
Notes
The most dangerous scenario is macadamia chocolate chip cookies or chocolate-covered macadamias — the combination amplifies both toxins. Raw and roasted macadamia nuts are equally toxic. Macadamia butter and macadamia-containing trail mixes also count.
Negative Signs
* Weakness in the hind legs — your dog may not be able to stand or walk
* Vomiting
* Tremors and shaking
* Elevated body temperature (hyperthermia)
* Lethargy and depression
* Joint stiffness and swollen limbs
FAQ
Q: My dog ate one macadamia nut. Is that enough to cause a reaction?
A: Possibly, especially for small dogs. Monitor for hind leg weakness, vomiting, and trembling over the next 12 hours. Call your vet if any symptoms appear.
Alternatives
Most dogs love peanuts and plain (unsalted) peanut butter, which are safe in moderation. Just always check the peanut butter label for xylitol.
Risks & Disclaimer
Call your vet if your dog ate macadamia nuts. While most dogs recover within 24–48 hours with supportive care, the combination of macadamia nuts and chocolate (common in cookies and candy) is a veterinary emergency that needs immediate treatment.
