Quantity
A dog can show signs of alcohol poisoning from less than a tablespoon of pure ethanol per pound of body weight. A few laps of beer probably won't harm a large dog, but a small dog getting into a mixed drink or wine is a vet call.
Notes
Alcohol isn't just in drinks. Rum cake, wine-soaked foods, fermented fruit (rotting apples in the yard), hand sanitizer, mouthwash, and vanilla extract all contain enough ethanol to be dangerous. Even bread dough that's been rising produces alcohol as the yeast ferments. Dogs who get into the garbage after a party are a classic exposure.
Negative Signs
* Vomiting and diarrhea
* Disorientation, staggering, and loss of coordination
* Difficulty breathing — slow, labored breaths
* Drooling excessively
* Drop in body temperature
* Seizures or tremors
* Loss of consciousness
FAQ
Q: My dog licked up a spilled beer. Should I worry?
A: A couple of laps of beer for a medium-to-large dog is unlikely to be an emergency, but watch for staggering or vomiting. For a small dog, or if they drank a significant amount, call your vet.
Alternatives
Low-sodium bone broth served chilled makes a much better "special drink" for your dog at social gatherings — they feel included without any risk.
Risks & Disclaimer
If your dog ingested alcohol, call your vet. If they're showing signs of disorientation, breathing difficulty, or loss of consciousness, this is a drop-everything emergency. Keep your dog warm on the way to the vet — alcohol drops body temperature.
