Quantity
There is no safe amount of moldy food for chickens. Even mold you can't see can produce dangerous mycotoxin levels. If feed smells musty, looks clumped, or has any visible mold, throw it out — don't pick out the bad parts and feed the rest.
Notes
The most common source of mycotoxin exposure is improperly stored feed — bags left open in damp sheds, feeders that get wet, or feed stored too long. Moldy bread is the second most common culprit: "give the stale bread to the chickens" is advice that can genuinely harm your flock if the bread has any mold on it. Damp kitchen scraps left in the sun also grow mold rapidly.
Negative Signs
* Gradual decline in egg production
* Poor feather quality and slow molting
* Pale comb and general weakness
* Diarrhea or abnormal droppings
* Mouth and crop lesions (from certain mycotoxins)
* Increased susceptibility to other diseases
* Sudden death in acute exposure
FAQ
Q: Can I just cut the moldy part off the bread and feed the rest to my chickens?
A: No. Mold sends invisible threads (hyphae) deep into food, and mycotoxins spread beyond the visible mold spot. If you can see mold on any part, the whole piece is compromised. Throw it away.
Q: My chicken feed got damp in the shed. Is it still okay to use?
A: If it smells musty, feels clumped, or has been damp for more than a day, replace it. Feed is cheap compared to a vet bill — or losing a bird. Store feed in sealed, dry containers and buy in quantities you'll use within a few weeks.
Alternatives
Fresh bread (not moldy) in small amounts is a fine occasional treat. Fresh kitchen scraps, offered the same day and removed if uneaten, are safe. The key word is fresh — if it wouldn't pass your own sniff test, don't give it to your flock.
Risks & Disclaimer
If you suspect mycotoxin exposure, remove all suspect feed and scraps immediately. Provide fresh, clean feed and water. A vet can test for mycotoxin exposure, but often the best diagnostic tool is response to removal — if symptoms improve when you switch to clean feed, you've found your answer.
