Lilies

Lilium spp., Hemerocallis spp.

Also known as: Easter lily, tiger lily, Asiatic lily, daylily, stargazer lily, lily of the valley

Danger (Avoid)

Lilies are the single deadliest household danger for cats, and most people have no idea. A bouquet on the kitchen table, a potted Easter lily from the store, a few fallen petals on the floor — any of these can kill your cat. Every part of the plant is lethal, and even a tiny exposure can trigger complete kidney shutdown.

Quantity

There is no safe amount. A single leaf, a lick of pollen, a sip of vase water — documented fatalities have occurred from each of these. This is not a dose-dependent toxin in any practical sense.

Notes

True lilies (Lilium species like Easter, tiger, Asiatic, and stargazer) and daylilies (Hemerocallis) are the killers. Lily of the valley is toxic too, but through a different mechanism (heart toxin, not kidneys). Peace lilies and calla lilies cause oral irritation but are not typically fatal. If you have a cat, the safest rule is simply no lilies in the house — ever.

Negative Signs

* Vomiting within 1-2 hours of exposure
* Loss of appetite and lethargy
* Drooling and pawing at the mouth
* Increased urination followed by sudden decrease (kidneys failing)
* No urination at all within 24-48 hours (kidney shutdown)
* Seizures and death in untreated cases

FAQ

Q: My cat brushed against a lily and got pollen on their fur. Is that dangerous?
A: Yes. Cats groom themselves constantly, so pollen on fur means pollen in mouth within minutes. Wipe the pollen off with a damp cloth immediately and call your vet. Don't wait to see if symptoms develop.

Q: Are all lilies equally dangerous to cats?
A: The most deadly are true lilies (Easter, tiger, Asiatic, stargazer, Japanese show) and daylilies. Peace lilies and calla lilies cause mouth pain and drooling but are rarely fatal. When in doubt, keep all lilies away from cats entirely.

Alternatives

Roses, sunflowers, gerbera daisies, and orchids are all cat-safe flowers that brighten a home without risking your cat's life. If someone sends you lilies, rehome them to a cat-free household immediately.

Risks & Disclaimer

This is the most time-sensitive emergency on this list. If your cat had any contact with a lily — ate part of it, licked pollen off their coat, drank vase water — rush them to a vet immediately. Do not wait for symptoms. Aggressive IV fluids within the first 18 hours can save your cat's life, but after 24 hours the kidney damage is often irreversible.
