Salt

NaCl

Also known as: table salt, salty snacks, chips, pretzels, salted nuts, crackers, sodium

Danger (Avoid)

Salt is one of the most common accidental toxins for budgies, because it's everywhere and people don't think of it as poison. A chip, a pretzel, a cracker, a salted nut — foods you'd hand-share with a budgie without thinking — can contain enough sodium to kill a bird this small. Your budgie has almost no ability to process excess salt, and the consequences are fast and severe.

Quantity

A single salted chip or pretzel can contain more sodium than a budgie should have in an entire week. The lethal dose of sodium for a small bird is shockingly low. If in doubt, assume it's too much.

Notes

The most common exposures are hand-sharing salty snacks during out-of-cage time. Chips, pretzels, crackers, salted nuts, popcorn with salt, and processed snack foods are all dangerous. Even "lightly salted" products contain more sodium than a budgie can safely handle. Mineral blocks sold for birds are formulated with safe sodium levels — table salt is not.

Negative Signs

* Excessive thirst and drinking
* Lethargy and weakness
* Tremors and loss of coordination
* Swollen crop
* Seizures
* Kidney failure
* Sudden death in severe cases

FAQ

Q: My budgie stole a piece of my chip. One chip can't be that bad, right?
A: It absolutely can. A single salted chip can contain 50-100mg of sodium — a massive dose for a bird weighing 35 grams. Offer fresh water and watch closely. If any neurological symptoms appear (tremors, head tilt, seizures), get to your avian vet immediately.

Q: Is a mineral block the same as giving salt?
A: No. Mineral blocks designed for birds contain carefully measured trace amounts of sodium along with other minerals. Table salt is pure, concentrated sodium chloride at levels that are dangerous for budgies. They're not interchangeable.

Alternatives

Plain, unsalted millet spray is the best "snack sharing" food for budgies. Unsalted, air-popped popcorn (no butter, no seasoning) is another safe occasional treat if your budgie enjoys it.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your budgie ate a salty food (chips, pretzels, salted crackers), offer fresh water immediately and contact your avian vet. If you notice tremors, seizures, or extreme lethargy, this is an emergency. The kidneys need support to flush the sodium, and your vet may need to administer fluids.
