Onion

Allium cepa

Also known as: onions, red onion, white onion, yellow onion, shallots, spring onions

Danger (Avoid)

Onion is toxic to budgies in all forms — raw, cooked, powdered, and dehydrated. Even the fumes from cutting onions can irritate a bird's sensitive respiratory system. The compounds that make you cry when you chop an onion are actively destroying your budgie's red blood cells.

Quantity

Any amount of onion is dangerous for budgies. Their blood volume is approximately 6-12% of their body weight — for a 35-gram budgie, that's roughly 2-4 milliliters of blood. It doesn't take much to disrupt a system that small.

Notes

Onion powder is more concentrated and therefore more dangerous per gram than raw onion. It hides in many prepared foods — crackers, chips, seasoning blends, soups, and sauces. Never share seasoned human food with your budgie. Even cooking onions in the same room can expose your bird to irritating fumes.

Negative Signs

* Weakness and lethargy — spending time on the cage floor
* Pale cere (the fleshy area above the beak)
* Labored breathing
* Loss of appetite
* Fluffed-up feathers
* Dark or discolored droppings

FAQ

Q: I was cooking with onions and my budgie was in the kitchen. Could the fumes hurt them?
A: Yes, onion fumes can irritate your budgie's respiratory system. Birds have extremely efficient lungs and air sacs — they absorb airborne compounds much more intensely than we do. Cook with onions in a well-ventilated area away from your bird, or move the cage to another room first.

Alternatives

If you're looking to add vegetable variety to your budgie's diet, try small pieces of bell pepper, cucumber, or leafy greens like romaine lettuce. They're nutritious and completely safe.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your budgie ate any onion or was exposed to strong onion fumes, contact your avian vet. Symptoms of anemia can take 1-3 days to appear, so don't assume your budgie is fine just because they look okay right now. A blood test can catch the damage early.
