Fruit Seeds and Pits

Also known as: apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, apricot pits, plum pits

Danger (Avoid)

Apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, apricot pits, and plum pits all contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide when crushed or chewed. Your budgie's beak is designed to crack seeds — which means they're perfectly equipped to break open a fruit pit and release the poison inside. This is one of the most common accidental poisonings in pet birds.

Quantity

Even one or two apple seeds, if thoroughly crushed by a budgie's beak, can release enough cyanide to be dangerous for a 30-40 gram bird. Larger pits (cherry, peach) contain more amygdalin but are harder for a budgie to crack. Never take the chance.

Notes

Apple seeds are the most common culprit because people often share apple slices with budgies without removing every seed. Cherry pits, peach pits, and apricot pits are less common exposures but equally dangerous. The flesh of these fruits is generally safe — it's specifically the seeds and pits that contain cyanide precursors. Always core and deseed fruit completely before offering it.

Negative Signs

* Sudden difficulty breathing — gasping, open-mouth breathing
* Bright red or flushed skin visible through feathers
* Weakness and inability to perch
* Tremors and seizures
* Loss of consciousness
* Sudden death in severe cases

FAQ

Q: I gave my budgie an apple slice and there was a seed in it. They cracked it open. What do I do?
A: Contact your avian vet immediately. Watch for difficulty breathing, weakness, or tremors. Cyanide acts fast in birds, so time matters. If your budgie seems fine after 30-60 minutes, the risk decreases — but still mention it to your vet.

Q: Can I give my budgie apple if I remove the seeds?
A: Yes — apple flesh is a healthy, safe treat for budgies. Just make absolutely sure every seed is removed before offering it. The flesh is fine; the seeds are the problem.

Alternatives

The fruit itself (apple flesh, peach flesh, cherry flesh) is perfectly safe and nutritious for budgies — just remove every seed and pit first. Berries like blueberries and raspberries are great alternatives with no dangerous pits.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your budgie cracked and ate a fruit seed or pit, get to an avian vet immediately. Cyanide poisoning progresses extremely fast in birds. Even if your budgie seems okay at first, the toxin can overwhelm their system within minutes.
