Caffeine

Also known as: coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills, coffee grounds

Danger (Avoid)

Caffeine is in the same toxic family as the theobromine in chocolate, and budgies are exquisitely sensitive to it. A budgie's heart already beats 300-500 times per minute — caffeine pushes that system into overdrive. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and even caffeinated soda are all off-limits.

Quantity

A few drops of coffee can be a significant dose for a 30-40 gram bird. There is no safe threshold for caffeine in budgies. Even decaf coffee contains small amounts of caffeine.

Notes

Budgies are naturally curious and will investigate open mugs on desks and tables. Unattended coffee cups are one of the most common accidental exposure scenarios. Tea, energy drinks, cola, and even some medications contain caffeine. Coffee grounds are extremely concentrated and dangerous.

Negative Signs

* Hyperactivity and agitation — frantic wing flapping
* Rapid, labored breathing
* Racing heartbeat (you may be able to feel it through the chest)
* Tremors and shaking
* Loss of coordination, falling off perch
* Cardiac arrest in severe cases

FAQ

Q: My budgie landed on my coffee mug and dipped their beak in. Is a tiny sip really dangerous?
A: It can be. A budgie weighs roughly an ounce — a few drops of coffee is a proportionally large dose of caffeine for their body. Call your avian vet and let them assess.

Alternatives

If you want to share a drink with your budgie, offer a shallow dish of fresh, room-temperature water. Some budgies enjoy bathing in it too.

Risks & Disclaimer

If your budgie drank coffee, tea, or any caffeinated liquid, contact an avian vet immediately. Even a few sips from an unattended mug can be a crisis for a bird this small. Do not wait for symptoms.
