Quantity
A budgie weighs roughly 30-40 grams. A few drops of any alcoholic beverage can be enough to cause alcohol poisoning at that body weight. There is no safe amount.
Notes
The most common exposure is budgies landing on unattended glasses during out-of-cage time. Wine, beer, cocktails, and spirits are all dangerous. Fermented fruit, rum cake, and alcohol-based cooking extracts (vanilla extract is 35% alcohol) also count. Never let your budgie near the table during meals with alcohol.
Negative Signs
* Disorientation — stumbling, unable to perch
* Loss of coordination, falling repeatedly
* Lethargy and unresponsiveness
* Regurgitation
* Labored, slow breathing
* Drop in body temperature (bird feels cold to touch)
* Loss of consciousness
FAQ
Q: My budgie took a sip from my wine glass. How worried should I be?
A: Very worried. Even a sip is proportionally massive for a bird weighing an ounce. Watch for disorientation, lethargy, or trouble perching, and call your avian vet right away.
Alternatives
Fresh water is the only drink your budgie needs. Some owners offer diluted, unsweetened fruit juice as an occasional treat — but plain water is always best.
Risks & Disclaimer
If your budgie ingested any alcohol, get to an avian vet immediately. Keep the bird warm (birds lose body heat fast when their system is depressed) and in a quiet, dark space during transport. Do not attempt any home remedies.
